Old bedding occupies a strange middle ground: too worn to donate as is, too useful to trash, and absolutely not welcome in your curbside recycling bin. Here is where each piece actually belongs.
The curbside bin is never the answer
Textiles jam sorting machinery at recycling facilities, which is why curbside programs universally exclude them. A comforter in the blue bin does not get recycled, it contaminates the load. Whatever you do with old bedding, the recycling bin is off the list.
Sheets and blankets: the shelters want them
The single most useful destination for worn sheets, blankets, and towels is your local animal shelter. Condition barely matters, shelters line kennels and crates with them year round, and most post standing requests for exactly this. Human focused charities, by contrast, generally require bedding in clean, undamaged condition, and many decline used bedding entirely for hygiene reasons.
Comforters and duvets: condition decides
A clean comforter without stains, tears, or odors can be donated to thrift stores and some shelters, washed first. Once it is stained or torn, it joins the sheets on the animal shelter route or goes to textile recycling.
Pillows: the hard truth
Used pillows are almost never accepted for donation, full stop. Hygiene standards rule them out at nearly every charity. Animal shelters sometimes take them for bedding, and a few textile recyclers accept the fill, but the honest expectation for an old pillow is disposal.
Textile recycling for everything else
Retail take back boxes and municipal textile drop offs accept worn out fabric that no one can reuse, where it becomes insulation, padding, and industrial rags. Search your city name with textile recycling to find the nearest drop point, and keep textiles bagged and dry, wet fabric gets rejected.
When the whole bed is going
