You do not need forty brand reviews. You need four decisions made in the right order, and this guide walks them.

Decision one: the type

Innerspring is the classic coil build: responsive, cooler sleeping, budget friendly, shorter lifespan. Memory foam contours and isolates motion, sleeps warmer, and excels for side sleepers and couples. Hybrid stacks foam comfort layers on a coil core and is the safest default for most people. Latex is durable, naturally cooler than memory foam, and usually the premium price of the group.

Decision two: firmness follows position

Side sleepers generally want soft to medium so shoulders and hips can sink. Back sleepers want medium to medium firm for lumbar support. Stomach sleepers need firm to keep hips from sagging into an arch. Combination sleepers land at medium. Body weight nudges everything one notch: heavier bodies firm up, lighter bodies soften.

Decision three: the size math

Measure the room before the showroom. A queen wants roughly a ten by ten room to breathe, a king wants twelve by twelve. Couples under six feet do fine on a queen; over six feet or with a starfish sleeper in the bed, a king earns its footprint. Do not forget the box spring or foundation question, because the old one has to leave too.

Decision four: budget honestly

Entry level gets you a serviceable bed in a box. Mid range buys meaningfully better foams, coils, and warranties, and is where most people should shop. Premium buys durability and materials, latex and high coil counts, that can outlast two cheap mattresses. Whatever the tier, buy from somewhere with a real trial period and read the return terms, because a mattress can only be judged horizontally over weeks.

The step everyone forgets

New mattress delivery day is old mattress problem day. Retailers sometimes haul away with delivery for a fee, but never standalone. A scheduled pickup with a guaranteed price from $85 solves it on your timeline, donation first when the old one still has life in it. Check how often replacement makes sense if you are on the fence.
