Does Habitat for Humanity ReStore Take Mattresses?

Most Habitat ReStores do not accept mattresses or box springs, though furniture is welcome. Here is why, and where a donation worthy mattress can actually go.

Most Habitat for Humanity ReStores do not accept mattresses or box springs. ReStores are excellent for furniture, cabinets, appliances, and building materials, but bedding is one of the most commonly declined categories across the network.

Why ReStores say no to mattresses

Used bedding carries hygiene regulations, liability concerns, and resale restrictions that vary by state, and most ReStores simply opt out of the category rather than manage the rules. Space is the other reason: mattresses are bulky, slow to sell where resale is even allowed, and every square foot a mattress occupies is a square foot a fast selling dresser cannot.

What your local ReStore likely will take

The rest of the bedroom is usually welcome: bed frames, dressers, nightstands, headboards, and lamps in good condition. Call ahead or check your local ReStore donation guidelines, because accepted categories differ by location, and many offer furniture pickup on their own schedule.

Where the mattress itself can go

If the mattress is clean and gently used, it still has a donation path. Donation pickup through Mattress Disposal Plus starts at $85 with the exact price guaranteed before you book: your Loader offers the mattress to local charity partners that do accept bedding, and if none can take it, recycling and responsible disposal follow in that order. Our guide to donating a used mattress covers the condition standards charities expect.
