How general junk haulers price
By truck volume, with a minimum. A mattress occupies a fraction of a truck, but the minimum charge assumes more, so single item jobs subsidize the model. Quotes are often finalized on site, which is where estimates historically grow. For a garage worth of mixed junk, volume pricing is fair and right. For one mattress, you are renting a truck fraction you do not need.
