Sometimes, and the honest answer depends almost entirely on where you live and what the carpet is made of. Carpet recycling is real, growing, and still far from universal.
Where recycling genuinely works
California runs a statewide carpet stewardship program, funded through an assessment on new carpet sales, with drop off sites across the state; if you are in California, that program is your first stop. Elsewhere, synthetic carpet, nylon especially, has recovery streams in some metros because the fiber can be reprocessed into new products. Search your city plus carpet recycling to see whether a processor operates near you.
Where it honestly does not
Wool and natural fiber rugs rarely have recycling paths and route to donation or disposal instead. Carpet padding is almost never reusable, though some recyclers accept foam pad separately. And glued down carpet pulled up in fragments is disposal bound nearly everywhere; recycling wants rolls, not shreds.
The rug version of the question
Area rugs get one extra option the wall to wall never had: donation. Clean rugs without stains or pet history are welcomed by charity partners, and area rug removal through Mattress Disposal Plus is priced exactly at checkout, pad included, with the donation attempt first and the recycling routes used where they exist. Vacuum it, and your Loader handles the rolling and the carry.
