The routing order is the policy
Every eligible pickup runs the same sequence. Donation first, to local charities that furnish homes for families who need them. Recycling second, where facilities operate, because roughly three quarters of a mattress by weight, the steel, foam, and wood, has recovery markets. Compliant disposal last, and only when the first two are off the table. The customer price is identical across all three outcomes, which removes any incentive to take the lazy route.
Why landfills hate mattresses anyway
Mattresses are the landfill’s worst tenant: bulky, nearly impossible to compact, and hard on processing equipment. That is why Massachusetts banned them from disposal statewide in 2022 and why California, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Oregon fund statewide recycling programs. The regulatory direction is one way, and our routing order was built for it years before most of those rules existed.
The tree planting chapter
Mattress Disposal Plus has partnered with tree planting organizations including One Tree Planted as part of its sustainability story, pairing removals with reforestation support. Planting trees does not offset a landfilled mattress, and we would never pretend it does. It sits alongside the real work, diversion, as a way of putting some of the proceeds toward the same side of the ledger.
What you can do with one booking
Choose donation pickup if your mattress is clean and gently used, and it may furnish a home instead of filling a hole in the ground. If it is past donating, the recycling routing still happens wherever the infrastructure exists. Either way, the environmental math of one scheduled pickup beats a mattress rotting behind a dumpster every single time.
