Personally, I’ve relied on Yelp many times to find great places to eat and often make dining choices based on Yelp ratings alone.
However, when it comes to hiring a local home service business, I use a different approach. Yelp simply isn’t built for evaluating home services. Its design caters to the restaurant industry, not service providers who come to your home.
Use Multiple Review Platforms for Home Services
It’s wise to consult several review sources to get a balanced view of a company’s performance, including sites like BBB.org, Thumbtack, Angi, and Google Reviews.
When evaluating a service-based business—such as housekeeping, appliance repair, landscaping, or junk removal services—Yelp should not be your only source. Reviews on Yelp are often skewed, either overly positive or negative, due to factors unique to the home service industry.
Home Service Businesses vs. Restaurants: Why Yelp Falls Short

Restaurant customers arrive by choice and are typically excited to dine. When satisfied, they are quick to leave positive reviews and tend to overlook minor issues. But if the experience disappoints, they’ll alert the Yelp community.
